Southwest Priority Card vs Premier: Which Is Worth the Extra $80?

Hands holding a plain card and passport by an extra-legroom window seat, weighing the southwest priority card vs premier

For most people weighing the southwest priority card vs premier, the answer comes down to how often you fly: the Priority card pays off if you are on a Southwest plane several times a year and want a good seat locked in the moment you book, while the Premier card is the smarter buy for occasional flyers who would rather keep $80 a year in their pocket. Both cards just got bigger welcome offers, so the timing to choose is now.

The Priority card now carries 90,000 bonus points after $3,000 in spending in the first 3 months, and Southwest lists a 12/2/26 end date on that offer. The Premier card is at 85,000 points after $2,000 in the same window, with no end date shown on its page.

The new welcome offers side by side

Here is how the three personal Rapid Rewards cards stack up today, based on Southwest’s card offer page. The Plus card is included for context, since it is the cheapest way into the family.

CardBonus pointsSpend in first 3 monthsAnnual feeAnniversary points
Priority90,000$3,000$2297,500
Premier85,000$2,000$1496,000
Plus80,000$1,000$993,000

On the bonus alone, the southwest priority card vs premier gap is small. Moving up to the Priority card gets you 5,000 extra points, but you have to put $1,000 more on the card in those first three months. On every card, the fee lands on the first billing statement, so there is no free first year.

Southwest priority card vs premier: where the perks split

The bonus is a one-time event. In any southwest priority card vs premier comparison, the real difference shows up in the perks you keep using after year one, and most of it is about seats.

BenefitPriority ($229)Premier ($149)
Seat choicePreferred or Standard seat at booking, when availablePreferred or Standard seat within 48 hours of departure, when available

Tier qualifying points2,500 per $5,000 spent1,500 per $5,000 spent

Seat timing matters more than it looks. The Premier card makes you wait until the 48-hour mark to grab a Preferred seat, and by then the good ones on a full flight may be gone. Among the southwest priority card benefits, picking that seat at booking is the one frequent flyers will feel on every trip.

The Extra Legroom upgrade is the other big one. Priority cardholders can move into those seats at no cost inside 48 hours of departure when they are open, with no cap on how often. The Premier card has nothing like it.

The math on the extra $80 a year

The southwest priority card annual fee is $229, which is $80 above the Premier card. Here is what that difference buys in the southwest priority card vs premier trade, using only the numbers on the offer page.

  • Anniversary points: 7,500 versus 6,000, so 1,500 more points each year.
  • Southwest spending: one extra point per dollar. Spend $2,000 a year on Southwest fares and that is 2,000 more points.
  • Status progress: at $10,000 of yearly card spending, you would earn 5,000 tier qualifying points on the Priority card against 3,000 on the Premier card. That edge lasts only through 2026, since both cards earn 1 tier qualifying point per eligible dollar from January 1, 2027.
  • What you give up: the 15% anniversary promo code. As a simple example, on a $400 eligible fare that code would save $60, which covers most of the fee gap by itself.

Put plainly, when you run the southwest priority card vs premier numbers, the points alone do not close an $80 gap for a light flyer. The upgrade to Extra Legroom and the at-booking seat choice are what tip the scale, and those only matter if you actually fly often enough to use them.

What both cards give you

Several southwest premier card benefits match the Priority card exactly, so do not pay more expecting extras here:

  • Your first checked bag flies free, and so does one for each of as many as 8 people booked with you.
  • You and that same group board no later than Group 5.
  • Snacks and drinks bought in the air earn a 25% rebate.
  • Purchases made abroad carry no foreign transaction fee.

If you mostly check bags and want an earlier boarding group for a family, either card handles that, which takes those perks out of the southwest priority card vs premier debate. We looked at how the entry-level version compares in our Rapid Rewards Plus card review.

Pick the Priority card if…

Here is how we would settle the southwest priority card vs premier question for different kinds of travelers.

  • You fly Southwest often enough that a better seat on most trips is worth real money to you.
  • You are tall, travel for work, or simply hate middle seats, and the unlimited Extra Legroom upgrades appeal.
  • You spend heavily on gas and dining, since the Priority card’s 2X there has no cap listed.
  • You are chasing elite status in 2026, where 2,500 tier points per $5,000 adds up faster.

Pick the Premier card if…

  • You fly Southwest a few times a year and mainly want the free bag and Group 5 boarding.
  • You would use the 15% anniversary code on a family trip.
  • Groceries are a big part of your budget, since the Premier card earns 2X there up to the $8,000 cap.
  • Reaching $3,000 in three months would be a stretch, but $2,000 is comfortable.

What we don’t know yet

Southwest’s redesigned Rapid Rewards program takes effect January 1, 2027. Its 2027 FAQ says card welcome bonuses will no longer count toward the Companion Pass, though cardmembers who apply and are approved by December 2, 2026 can still count the bonus toward a 2026 pass valid through December 31, 2027. From January 1, 2027, every Rapid Rewards card earns the same 1 tier qualifying point per eligible dollar, so the current 1,500 and 2,500 per $5,000 tiers stop setting these cards apart. Southwest says existing card benefits will continue. It is also unclear whether the Premier offer shares the Priority card’s 12/2/26 deadline, because no end date appears next to it. Anyone weighing the southwest priority card vs premier for a 2027 travel plan should read the full terms before applying, since Chase and Southwest eligibility rules apply to both.

Frequently asked questions

What boarding group do you get with the Southwest Priority card?

Group 5 or earlier. The same perk covers up to 8 companions on your reservation, and the Premier card offers the identical boarding benefit.

Does the Southwest Premier card have a foreign transaction fee?

No. Neither the Premier nor the Priority card charges foreign transaction fees, so both work for trips abroad.

Does the Southwest Priority card include seat upgrades?

Yes. Cardholders can move to Extra Legroom seats at no charge within 48 hours of departure when seats are open, with no limit on how often.

Should you pay $80 more for the Southwest Priority card?

If you fly Southwest regularly and care where you sit, the southwest priority card vs premier choice tilts toward Priority, and the 90,000-point offer makes the first year easy to justify. If you fly a few times a year and mostly want a free bag, the Premier card does that job for less. Either way, the best seat on the plane is only worth paying for if you are in it often.
