As of October 22, 2026, the Discover it Cash Back card carries its biggest opening offer in years, and the Discover it referral bonus now sits on top of it instead of replacing it. A new cardmember who comes in through a friend’s link can collect $300 in bonus cash before the first-year Cashback Match is even counted.

For most of the last decade, the standard deal was $100 after a first purchase. The new public offer is $200, and the extra $100 for using a referral link still applies, so the gap between applying cold and applying through a friend just got more interesting.

Who can earn the Discover it referral bonus

Two people come out ahead with the Discover it referral bonus: the new applicant and the existing cardmember who shares the link. Doctor of Credit reports that the $200 welcome offer now shows up on referral links, and that the referrer and the new member each receive $100 once the conditions are met. Discover’s own card page does not describe the referral program, so treat those referral details as reported rather than officially confirmed.

The bigger eligibility question is your history with this card. Discover’s terms say the $200 bonus may be unavailable to current or former cardmembers who received a new cardmember bonus on this same product in the past 48 months. If you opened this card and collected its bonus within the last four years, you may not qualify for the new one, even through a friend’s link.

  • Good fit: you have never held the Discover it Cash Back card, or your last bonus on it was more than 48 months ago.
  • Likely shut out: you currently carry the card or earned its new cardmember bonus within the last four years.
  • Referrer side: anyone who already holds a Discover card with a working referral link can share it.

How to collect the full $300, step by step

The order of operations matters, because the two pieces of the offer have different triggers and different deadlines.

  1. Get a referral link from someone who already has a Discover card. Applying through the regular public page earns the $200, but not the Discover it referral bonus.
  2. Confirm the $200 offer appears on the application. Before you submit, check that the welcome offer listed on the page reads $200 after $500 in purchases within 3 months.
  3. Apply and get approved. Your 3-month spending window and your Cashback Match year both start from approval.
  4. Make a payment within 8 weeks. According to the reported referral terms, any payment amount works. A small payment made soon after approval, before your first statement arrives, handles this.
  5. Spend $500 within 3 months. That works out to roughly $167 a month, which most households cover with groceries and gas alone.

Put a reminder in your calendar for both dates. Missing the 8-week payment step would forfeit the Discover it referral bonus, even if you clear the spending requirement easily.

What the Discover it welcome bonus is really worth

The upfront cash is only part of the story. Discover matches every dollar of cash back you earn in the first 365 days, with no cap, and adds the match within two billing periods after that year ends. That turns the base 1% into an effective 2% and the activated 5% quarterly categories into 10% for year one.

Piece of the offerRequirementValue
Welcome bonus$500 in purchases within 3 months$200 statement credit
Referral bonus (reported)Apply through a referral link, make a payment within 8 weeks$100
Cashback MatchAutomatic for year oneDoubles all cash back earned
Annual feeNone$0

Here is the simplest math using only sourced numbers. Spend exactly $500 in non-bonus categories during the first three months, and you earn $5 at 1%. The match turns that into $10 at year’s end. Add the $200 welcome credit and the $100 Discover it referral bonus, and that minimal path returns about $310 on $500 of spending you would have done anyway.

Anything you push through the rotating 5% categories after activation boosts that figure further, since those purchases effectively earn 10% until the first anniversary. Discover does cap the 5% rate at a quarterly maximum, so check the limit each quarter when you activate.

Limits and gotchas to watch

The match is not paid monthly. You see the doubled amount only after your first year closes, and only if the account is still open. Discover excludes rewards on closed accounts, so canceling early forfeits it.

Not everything gets matched. Statement credits and rewards moved in from Discover or Capital One deposit accounts are left out, and so are rewards processed after the match period ends.

The 0% intro APR is a separate tool. Both new purchases and transferred balances get a 0% rate for the first 15 months, after which Discover charges a variable 18.74% to 28.74%. A balance transfer fee applies. Carrying a balance after the intro period would erase the value of the bonus quickly, so this offer works best for people who pay in full.

Referral terms can shift without notice. Because Discover’s public card page does not spell out the referral payout, the Discover it referral bonus could change or vanish before you apply. Check the application page itself, not a screenshot a friend sent last week.

If you are building credit for the first time, the rotating categories can still be useful, as covered in our guide on how students use the Discover it rotating categories. For a look at how the lineup has evolved since the Capital One deal, see our Discover it Secured Cash Back review.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Discover it referral bonus stack with the $200 offer?

Yes, based on current reports. The $200 welcome offer appears on referral links, and the extra $100 is added on top for a total of $300 in bonus cash.

Do I need to make a payment to get the referral bonus?

Yes. The reported terms require a payment of any amount within 8 weeks of opening the account. A small payment soon after approval covers it.

Can a former cardmember get the Discover it welcome bonus?

Possibly not. Discover says the bonus may be unavailable if you received a new cardmember bonus on this card in the past 48 months.

Should you wait for a Discover it referral before applying?

If a friend or family member already holds a Discover card, asking for their link costs you nothing and adds $100 for each of you, which makes the Discover it referral bonus the easiest money in this offer. People who already earned a bonus on this card in the last four years can skip it. Everyone else should open the official Discover it application page, confirm the $200 figure, and then decide. Few no-fee cards pay $300 just for a first year of normal spending.
