Tours and activities rarely fall into a credit card bonus category, so a Viator booking usually earns just 1-2 points per dollar. That makes Viator one of the best places to stack two things: an elevated Rakuten shopping-portal rate and a targeted Amex Offer. Both come back regularly. In 2026 alone, Amex has run several Viator offers, and Rakuten’s Viator rate has jumped into double digits several times. Here’s how to set up the stack, what to watch for in the fine print, and how to time your booking.

What Is Viator and Why Does It Matter for Rewards Stackers?

Viator is one of the largest online marketplaces for tours, activities, and experiences worldwide. Whether you are booking a northern lights excursion in Scandinavia, a cooking class in Italy, or museum skip-the-line tickets closer to home, Viator aggregates options across thousands of destinations. Because it functions more like a general e-commerce platform than a traditional travel purchase, it often falls outside the bonus categories offered by most travel rewards cards, making portal and card-linked offers particularly valuable here.

The Two Offers You Can Stack at Viator

Rakuten cash back (or Amex or Bilt points)

Rakuten pays a percentage back when you click through to Viator before booking. Rakuten lists Viator’s previous rate as 2%, but promotions push it much higher, sometimes for a single day. As of October 19, 2026 it’s 13%. It was 14% on October 18, and portal trackers reported 22x in late July 2026. Always check the live rate before you book.

Rakuten can pay you three ways:

  • Cash back.
  • Amex Membership Rewards points, at one point per cent of cash back, so 13% becomes 13x. You need an Amex card that earns Membership Rewards, but you can pay at Viator with any card. See Amex or Chase: which currency is best for travel for how those points compare.
  • Bilt Points. Since mid-2026, only Bilt Silver members and above get the full rate. Members without status convert at half, so 13% works out to about 6.5x. Here’s how Bilt status and card rules work.

Targeted Amex Offers at Viator

Amex regularly targets cardholders with Viator statement credits. Recent examples, all now expired:

  • $25 back on $200+, usable twice (Feb-Mar 2026)
  • $40 back on $250, usable twice (Jul-Sep 2026)

These offers are targeted, so check the Amex Offers section of each of your cards, including business cards like the Amex Business Platinum. Recent offers required the minimum in a single purchase, in U.S. dollars, on Viator’s U.S. site or app.

How the Stack Works, Step by Step

  1. Add the Amex Offer to the card you’ll use. Amex only counts purchases made with the enrolled card, and purchases before enrollment don’t qualify.
  2. Check your Rakuten payout setting (cash back, Membership Rewards or Bilt) before you shop. Changes apply only to future purchases.
  3. Click through Rakuten (or use the browser extension) and book on viator.com in the same session. Bookings in the Viator app don’t qualify for Rakuten.
  4. Pay with the enrolled Amex card and make sure the single purchase meets the offer’s minimum.

One caveat: Rakuten’s Viator terms say cash back isn’t available when card-linked offers or discount codes are used, and an Amex Offer is a card-linked offer. Deal sites and readers regularly report receiving both, but Rakuten doesn’t guarantee it. Treat the Rakuten portion as likely, not certain.

Example (illustrative)

Say you’re booking two separate activities on a trip: a $260 snorkel tour and a $300 food tour, with a Rakuten rate of 13% and an Amex Offer like the recent “$40 back on $250, usable twice”:

  • Rakuten: 13% of $560 = $72.80 (or 7,280 Membership Rewards points)
  • Amex Offer: $40 x 2 = $80 in statement credits
  • Total: $152.80 back, about 27% of the $560 spent, before the points your card normally earns

Each activity is its own booking that meets the minimum on its own. We wouldn’t split a single tour into partial bookings to trigger an offer twice. Recent Amex terms required the minimum in one purchase, and split bookings can cause problems with the tour operator.

New to Rakuten?

Rakuten usually has a new-member bonus, typically paid after you spend a minimum at eligible stores within a set number of days. The amount and terms change often (it was $10 in October 2026), so check them when you sign up. A Viator booking can help you reach the minimum.

The Fine Print

  • Completed tours only. Rakuten pays only on completed tours; canceled or refunded bookings don’t earn.
  • Exclusions. Theme park tickets, virtual tours, gift vouchers (and purchases paid with them) and Viator Travel Agent Program bookings are excluded.
  • Payout timing. Rakuten pays quarterly; for example, activity from October 1-December 31 pays out February 15. Cash back usually confirms only after the tour date, so a booking for next summer can take a long time to pay.
  • Amex timing. Credits typically post within 30 days but can take up to 90 days after the offer ends, and may be reversed if the booking is refunded or canceled.
  • Targeted and time-limited. Neither the Amex Offer nor the elevated Rakuten rate is guaranteed to be available to you when you book.

Alternatives When There’s No Amex Offer

  • Book through Rakuten anyway. An elevated rate on its own beats a typical card’s 1-2x on tours.
  • Look for a Chase Offer. Chase cardholders have also been targeted with Viator offers (for example, 8% back on up to $125, reported in October 2026), and those can stack with Rakuten the same way.
  • Use the right card. With no offer, pay with a card that earns well on travel. Viator typically codes as travel with Chase and Amex cards. Our Amex Gold vs. Chase Sapphire comparison covers two good options.

FAQ

Can you stack Rakuten and Amex Offers at Viator?

Often, yes, but it isn’t guaranteed. Rakuten’s terms exclude purchases using card-linked offers, though many travelers report receiving both. The Amex credit is unaffected either way.

How long does Rakuten take to pay for a Viator booking?

Cash back is paid only once the tour is completed, then on Rakuten’s next quarterly payout date (Feb 15, May 15, Aug 15 or Nov 15).

Do I need an Amex card to earn Membership Rewards points through Rakuten?

You need a U.S. Amex account that earns Membership Rewards to choose points as your payout. You can pay at Viator with any card, but you need an Amex card to use an Amex Offer.

Does booking in the Viator app earn Rakuten cash back?

No. Rakuten requires the booking on viator.com after clicking through, ideally in one session.

AmazingMiles Verdict

Viator is one of the easiest places to earn well on spending that normally gets base rewards. When a targeted Amex Offer is on your card and Rakuten’s rate is elevated, the stack can return 20% or more on tours you were going to book anyway. Add the offer first, click through Rakuten, book on the website, and expect the Rakuten portion to pay out after your trip. If no offer is live today, it’s worth waiting a few weeks for non-urgent bookings, because both have come back repeatedly in 2026.
