Update (October 2026): This change is now in effect. FedEx stopped qualifying for the Business Gold Flexible Business Credit on Oct. 1, 2026, and American Express added shipments purchased on UPS.com the same day. We’ve updated this article with the new terms.

The American Express Business Gold Card’s Flexible Business Credit has changed. As of Oct. 1, 2026, FedEx purchases no longer count toward the up to $20 monthly statement credit. Amex didn’t shrink the benefit, though: on the same day, shipments purchased on UPS.com became eligible. The credit is still worth up to $240 a year, and now applies to U.S. purchases at Grubhub, U.S. office supply stores and UPS.com.

What Changed With the Flexible Business Credit

The Flexible Business Credit gives Business Gold card members up to $20 in statement credits each month, or up to $240 a year, on eligible purchases. Enrollment is required.

U.S. office supply storesEligibleEligible

UPS.com shipmentsNot eligibleEligible
Monthly creditUp to $20Up to $20

The $20 cap is shared across all eligible merchants. You can’t earn $20 at Grubhub and another $20 at UPS.com in the same month.

How the Change Played Out

The FedEx removal took a while to settle. It was first reported earlier in 2026, briefly described as having been shared in error, and later confirmed. It took effect on Oct. 1, 2026, and Amex added UPS.com as an eligible merchant the same day. If you used the credit for FedEx shipping, move that spend to UPS.com or another eligible merchant.

UPS.com Credit: What Counts and What Doesn’t

The UPS option is narrower than “anything UPS.” Based on the terms reported when the change went live:

  • Counts: small parcel shipments bought directly on UPS.com with your enrolled Business Gold Card.
  • Doesn’t count: purchases at The UPS Store locations.
  • Timing: credits can take up to 8 weeks to post, and the purchase must process in the calendar month you want it to count toward. A purchase on the last day of the month that processes the next day will likely count toward the following month.

If you walk into a UPS Store to ship a package, you won’t get the credit. Create the label on UPS.com instead.

Impact on Business Gold Card Value Proposition

For businesses that relied on FedEx shipping, the change means moving that spend to UPS.com or another eligible merchant. The total credit didn’t shrink, and the Flexible Business Credit is still one of the card’s more straightforward benefits because it doesn’t require complex category tracking or activation.

The change also continues a broader trend of reduced benefits for shipping expenses on this card. The Business Gold previously offered 4X Membership Rewards points on U.S. shipping purchases as one of its eligible bonus categories. That category was already eliminated in a prior revision, meaning the card no longer provides enhanced earning for shipping costs.

That said, UPS.com shipments now count toward the monthly credit, so businesses with steady shipping can still offset part of that cost.

How to Still Maximize the Flexible Business Credit

The goal is to use the full $20 each month on spending your business already has:

  • Ship through UPS.com. If you send packages regularly, this is the closest replacement for FedEx. Pay for the label online with your enrolled card.
  • Restock office supplies. U.S. office supply stores such as Staples and Office Depot/OfficeMax count. One $20 run each month for ink, paper or packing materials uses the full credit.
  • Order team meals on Grubhub. A working lunch or late-night delivery is an easy way to use it.
  • Enroll first. The credit only works after you enroll the card, online or by calling the number on the back.

The credit resets every month, so an unused month is lost. A mid-month calendar reminder helps. If you’re building a setup around business spending, see our best business and personal credit card combinations.

Potential Card Overhaul on the Horizon

The FedEx removal may be part of a larger restructuring of the Business Gold Card. American Express has reportedly been surveying cardholders about potential changes, which often signals upcoming product updates. The Business Gold now also includes up to $300 per calendar year in statement credits on U.S. purchases of ChatGPT Business (enrollment required; the subscription auto-renews). It sits alongside up to $150 per calendar year for Squarespace and up to $12.95 per month toward a monthly Walmart+ membership.

Whether more benefit adjustments or an annual fee change follow remains to be seen. Check the current terms on the American Express site before you apply.

Card issuers frequently use benefit changes as opportunities to reposition products in the market. American Express may be adjusting the Business Gold to better differentiate it from other business cards in its portfolio or to reflect shifting spending patterns among small business owners.

Why This Matters for Travelers

This change primarily affects business owners rather than personal cardholders, but it has implications for anyone considering the Business Gold Card for their spending strategy. The card remains popular among points enthusiasts because it offers 4X Membership Rewards on the two select categories where a business spends the most each billing cycle, up to $150,000 in combined purchases per year. Starting February 17, 2027, the advertising and wireless 4X categories narrow to purchases made directly with select providers, such as Google and Meta for ads and the major carriers for wireless. We cover who is affected in our breakdown of the Amex Business Gold 4x category changes.

Because UPS.com replaced FedEx, the Flexible Business Credit is still worth up to $240 a year. For businesses on the fence about whether the card’s $375 annual fee is justified, what matters is whether you will actually use the $20 each month.

Travel rewards enthusiasts who maintain business cards specifically to maximize Membership Rewards earning should evaluate whether the Business Gold still fits their strategy. If shipping expenses were a significant part of why you valued this card, alternative options may now provide better returns. Other American Express business cards or competitors from Chase and Capital One might better serve businesses with heavy shipping volumes. For shipping spend, the Chase Ink Business Preferred is worth comparing, since shipping is one of its bonus categories.

No. It’s still up to $20 a month, or $240 a year, shared across Grubhub, U.S. office supply stores and UPS.com.

AmazingMiles Verdict

Losing FedEx stings if you shipped with it every month, but the Flexible Business Credit is still worth up to $240 a year, and UPS.com gives shippers a direct replacement. For most small businesses, at least one of Grubhub, office supplies or UPS.com will be a natural fit. The bigger question is whether the card’s $375 annual fee pays off through its 4X categories and other credits. If you can use the $20 each month without changing how you spend, this change hardly affects the card’s value.
