Airbnb Checkout Rules Are Changing: What It Means for Guests

Dishes left in a rental kitchen sink, towels on the counter and a suitcase by the door under airbnb checkout rules

The last hour of a vacation rental stay is about to get shorter. Under the updated Airbnb checkout rules, a host can no longer expect you to scrub the dishes, strip the beds or haul trash bags to a dumpster down the street before you hand back the keys. The new house rules policy takes effect on November 20, 2026.

If you book rentals with points or card credits, the payoff is practical: less unpaid work on departure day and a visible warning on listings that still push cleaning onto guests.

What changes on November 20 and what changed already

Airbnb laid out the update in an October 20 notice to hosts. The house rules tools in the listing editor changed that same day. The stricter policy on what hosts may ask of guests follows a month later, on November 20.

The core idea behind the Airbnb checkout rules is that every request has to be reasonable. Jobs a cleaner should handle are out. Small courtesies that take a guest a minute or two are still fair game.

Airbnb checkout rules: allowed requests vs banned chores

Here is how the four examples Airbnb gives line up in practice:

AreaA host may still ask you toA host can no longer ask you to
DishesLeave used dishes in the sinkWash them and put them away
LaundryCollect the used towelsStrip the beds or run a load of washing
TrashSort garbage and recycling into the bins indoorsCarry garbage off the property
UtilitiesSwitch off the air conditioning on the way outSkip using an amenity the listing advertises, such as AC

Some flexibility is built in. What counts as reasonable depends on the property, the stay and local conditions, so a cabin in bear country may still ask you to use an animal-proof trash container, and a home under drought restrictions may still ask you to limit shower time.

Where house rules have to live now

The second shift is about placement. Every rule and request must sit in the listing’s House rules and requests section, not elsewhere on the listing, in messages or on a sign in the home.

That should make Airbnb checkout rules easier to check before you pay. Airbnb says house rules will show up more clearly on listings, in the Trips tab and in reservation reminders, and hosts can send them as a quick reply during your stay.

  • Standard rules set in the listing editor cover guest limits, quiet hours, events, pets, smoking and vaping, commercial photo or video shoots, and locking up at departure with optional key-return steps.
  • Contracts are allowed only for narrow reasons, such as a legal or HOA requirement, a monthly rental, an Airbnb Luxe home or an optional extra like a golf cart. Airbnb does not enforce these contracts and does not require you to sign one.

How Airbnb will flag listings that ignore the policy

Hosts whose requests cross the line will see them highlighted in the listing editor along with suggested fixes, and they get an email. They can appeal. If the problem is left unfixed, guests may see an alert on the listing, for example one saying it “includes cleaning requests”.

That label is the useful part for travelers: a host who ignores the Airbnb checkout rules becomes easy to spot while you compare places.

Your side of the deal as a guest

The update is not a free pass. Guests still have to follow house rules, and Airbnb encourages them to go along with reasonable requests. A host may cancel a booking without fees or penalties if you break a house rule during the stay, or if you say before check-in that you plan to. Guests who break Airbnb’s policies can be suspended or removed from the platform.

So the Airbnb checkout rules shrink the task list, but what remains still counts. Our list of travel mistakes that can ruin a trip is a good reminder of how small slips snowball.

What Airbnb has not said yet

A few gaps remain. The notice does not mention cleaning fees, so there is no word on whether prices shift once chore lists disappear. It also does not explain how guests should report a host who keeps asking for banned tasks after November 20, beyond the planned alerts.

Until Airbnb fills in those details, read the House rules and requests section before you book, and save a screenshot of the Airbnb checkout rules for your stay. If you also worry about privacy in rentals, our guide to spotting hidden cameras while traveling pairs well with that habit.

Frequently asked questions about Airbnb checkout chores

Do you have to clean an Airbnb before leaving?

Not in the deep-cleaning sense. From November 20, 2026, hosts cannot ask you to wash dishes, strip beds, start laundry or take trash off-site, though they can still ask for small tasks like putting dishes in the sink.

Can Airbnb hosts cancel your reservation for breaking house rules?

Yes. A host can cancel without fees or other consequences if you break a house rule during the stay or say before check-in that you intend to.

What does ‘includes cleaning requests’ mean on an Airbnb listing?

It is an alert Airbnb may show when a host has not fixed requests that go beyond what the policy allows. It tells you the listing still asks guests for cleaning work.

Should you pick rentals differently after November 20?

If you mostly book hotels with points, nothing here changes your plans. If you rent homes for family trips or group getaways, the new Airbnb checkout rules work in your favor, so treat an “includes cleaning requests” alert as a reason to keep scrolling. A good rental ending now looks like towels in a pile, not a mop in your hand.
