United Is Dropping Flight Counts for Status: What It Means for Elites

The united status requirements 2027 boil down to one currency: Premier Qualifying Points. From January 1, 2027, United stops counting flight segments toward Premier status, so Silver takes 6,000 PQP, Gold 12,000, Platinum 18,000 and 1K 32,000, and every tier still needs at least four flights on United or United Express.

Three of those four numbers are exactly what United already asks of members who qualify on points alone. The real pain lands in two places: 1K, which climbs from 28,000 PQP, and anyone who has been reaching a tier through the cheaper combination of lots of flights plus fewer points.

How the united status requirements 2027 compare with today

For the current qualification year, United offers two routes to each tier. You either combine a flight count with a smaller PQP total, or you skip the flight count and earn a bigger PQP total. Next year the first route is gone.

Premier 1K60 flights + 22,000 PQP28,000 PQP32,000 PQP

The four-flight floor stays in place at every level of the united status requirements 2027. What disappears is the PQF column, which used to reward people who flew constantly on low fares. United lists the switch on its MileagePlus what’s new page.

Which United elites take the biggest hit

High-frequency 1K flyers. Someone flying 60 inexpensive segments a year could hit 1K with 22,000 PQP. Under the new structure that same traveler needs 32,000. That is 10,000 extra points, or roughly 45.5% more than before (10,000 divided by 22,000).

Segment counters at the lower tiers. Silver, Gold and Platinum members who leaned on flight counts face a 20% higher points target, because 5,000 becomes 6,000, 10,000 becomes 12,000 and 15,000 becomes 18,000.

Points-only 1K members. Your bar moves from 28,000 to 32,000 PQP, an increase of about 14.3%.

Spend-based Silver, Gold and Platinum members. Your number stays put. If you already qualify on PQP alone and take at least four United flights, the united status requirements 2027 look identical to what you face today.

Where United credit cards fit into Premier qualification

Spending on participating United co-branded cards still earns PQP, and United is adding a small head start for cardholders. It equals 5% of the tier requirement, which means Silver members get 300 PQP, Gold 600, Platinum 900 and 1K 1,600. The deposit follows the status you hold, and an eligible United card opened by December 31 counts toward it.

Card spend is a gap filler rather than a full path at the upper tiers. The United Club card earns 1 PQP for every $15 spent, so reaching Platinum’s 18,000 PQP from that card alone would take $270,000 in purchases (18,000 x $15).

Under the united status requirements 2027, a returning 1K member’s 1,600 PQP deposit covers a real slice of the higher target, but it is not a reason on its own to pay an annual fee. A card makes sense if you already value its perks and plan to put real United spending on it.

What to do before the 2027 qualification year starts

  • Finish your 2026 run. The new rules apply from January 1, 2027, so the flights-plus-points option is still available for the status you are earning right now.
  • Check your card situation by December 31. If you already hold an eligible United card, or were about to apply anyway, the 5% head start is a modest extra.
  • Rerun your plan in PQP, not segments. Add up what your typical United trips actually earn in points and compare that total with the new target for your tier.
  • Be honest about short-haul habits. If you fly often on cheap tickets, the united status requirements 2027 may push you a tier lower in 2028 even with the same travel calendar.

What United has not spelled out yet

The announcement covers how status is earned. United has not said whether the way fares or partner flights earn PQP will change, and it has not announced new perks to offset the higher 1K bar.

It is also unclear whether the 5% cardholder head start is a one-time deposit or something that will return each year. Anyone planning around the united status requirements 2027 should treat that bonus as a 2027 feature until United says otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

Do premier qualifying flights still count for United status in 2027?

No. From January 1, 2027, United bases Premier status on PQP alone, although you still need at least four flights on United or United Express.

How many PQP do you need for United Gold status in 2027?

You need 12,000 PQP, the same as today’s points-only route. Members who used the 30-flight option lose that shortcut.

What are the United 1K requirements for 2027?

Premier 1K takes 32,000 PQP plus at least four United or United Express flights, up from 28,000 PQP on the current points-only route.

Should you keep chasing United status under the 2027 rules?

If most of your United spending comes from pricier business or long-haul tickets and you aim for Silver through Platinum, the united status requirements 2027 change little, so carry on. Frequent short-hop flyers and 60-segment 1K members should run their numbers now and decide whether the extra spend is worth it or whether a lower tier will do. United status is now purely a spending contest, and the scoreboard only counts dollars.
